An interactive GPX course map for race planning

Published

A GPX file contains far more useful information than a line on a map. Track3D Race Planner combines the course route, checkpoints and terrain so runners can understand how the race is laid out before they start planning individual legs.

See the course and checkpoints together

The interactive course map places the GPX route and Race Plan checkpoints in the same view. That makes it easier to relate checkpoint names and distances to their actual position on the course.

The map complements the elevation profile rather than replacing it. Together they provide two views of the same race: where the course goes and how the terrain changes along the way.

Grade colouring adds terrain context

Course sections can be coloured by grade so climbing, descending and flatter terrain are visible directly on the route. This gives the runner another way to identify where the character of the course changes.

That terrain context is also relevant to pacing. A 10 kilometre leg with a major climb is not the same planning problem as 10 kilometres of flatter running.

Useful before pacing starts

The map is intended to help runners understand the course first. Checkpoint planning, timing and Course-Aware Pacing can then be built on top of that understanding.
