Shape your ultra marathon Race Strategy

Published

Course-Aware Pacing can calculate how a target finish might be distributed across a course, but runners do not all want to approach a race in exactly the same way. Race Strategy adds another layer of control over how that calculated plan is shaped.

Start from Course-Aware Pacing

Race Strategy works with the Course-Aware Pacing plan rather than replacing it with an unrelated set of manual checkpoint times. The course, target finish, planned stops and race constraints remain part of the planning context.

Shape how the race is approached

The runner can influence how effort is distributed through the race so the plan better reflects the strategy they intend to use on race day.

This is different from changing the target finish itself. The purpose is to shape the journey through the course while keeping the overall planning target aligned.

Strategy remains a runner decision

A pacing strategy is not a guarantee that a runner can execute it. Fatigue, weather, nutrition, trail conditions and many other factors can change what happens during an ultra.

Race Strategy is therefore a planning control: it gives the runner a way to express how they want to approach the course and then inspect the resulting timing plan before race day.
